GREGG

James C. GREGG was born, 1833, in Uniontown, Fayette County, PA. It is possible that his father, John GREGG, moved the family to West Virginia prior to the Civil War. This is reasonable to believe because John GREGG joined 'Co. B 7th West Virginia Infantry' when the Civil War broke out.

When James was 21 years old in 1854, he moved to Iowa. While in Iowa, James met a young women named Martha. Martha MIDDAUGH was born in Wapaloo, Indiana on January 28, 1844. While Martha was still a child she moved to Iowa with her parents. She was one of four daughters of Benjamin and Eliza MIDDAUGH. Benjamin MIDDAUGH was born, 1816, in New York. Eliza MIDDAUGH was born, 1822, in Maryland. In 1860 James C. GREGG and Martha MIDDAUGH began their married life together in Iowa. When the great war called the young husband, he bid his wife and baby girl goodbye. For three years, Martha kept a lonely vigil. James C. GREGG joined 'Co. C 5th Iowa Infantry' in July, 1861. He was wounded in February, 1864. James was Discharged at Luka, MS in July, 1864.
